Evidence-Based Therapy for Men

Feel like you’re not measuring up? Maybe it shows up as stress, frustration, or pulling away from the people who matter. Maybe you keep pushing through, but something inside feels off — shame, fear, self-doubt — like you’re stuck and don’t know how to move forward.

At Berg Counselling, I work with men throughout Ontario, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia who are carrying more than they let on.

I know what it’s like to look around at your life and quietly wonder, “Is this really it?” You’re not alone in that. As a therapist, I’ve helped many men find steady footing again — with less pressure, more clarity, and a stronger sense of self.

You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to be willing to start.

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • I primarily use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (specifically the Unified Protocol), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Prolonged Exposure — all evidence-based approaches backed by research.

I also work through an attachment lens, meaning I pay close attention to how early relationship patterns might be shaping how you connect, cope, and respond to stress today.

  • What you share in therapy is kept confidential, and I will not disclose information without your consent — unless legally required to do so (such as risk of harm, child abuse, or a court order).

As part of my commitment to providing the best possible care, I sometimes participate in professional supervision. This means I may discuss aspects of your case, with a qualified supervisor. These conversations are held in strict confidence and follow all professional and legal guidelines to protect your privacy. Supervision helps ensure that you receive thoughtful, ethical, and effective support.

  • We’ll regularly reflect on your progress to ensure our work remains focused on what matters most to you. Please complete the questionnaires sent before your first appointment and when requested, as they help provide an objective view of your progress.

  • Online therapy can offer several practical benefits. It makes accessing therapy easier, no matter where you live, which is especially helpful if you're in a remote area or have trouble with mobility. You can also schedule sessions more flexibly, fitting them into your busy life without much hassle. Online therapy can save you money since you won't have travel expenses. Plus, being in the comfort of your own home (or car for that matter!) might help you feel more at ease, making it easier to open up.

  • Yes, I offer in-person therapy at my office in St. Catharines.

  • All St. Catharines meters have a three-hour maximum daily parking limit from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at a rate of $2.00 per hour (effective January 1, 2024). Metered parking is free outside those hours, except between the hours of 2 a.m. to 6 a.m., where parking is prohibited. Quarters, loonies and toonies are accepted at City meters and dispenser lots. HST is included in all quoted parking lot and garage fees. Credit card payments are now accepted at dispenser lots and at a number of on-street dispensers.

You also have the option to pay for parking with a smart phone using the Honk Mobile app at some of the metered parking spots and lots in Downtown St. Catharines. Use the Honk app to search, pay for and top up parking. Honk also send notifications to you when parking is about to expire and allows you to buy more time from your device. There is a 35 cent processing fee for using this app.

There is free 2-hour parking located on Gerrard St. and Beecher St; however, this can be busy at times.

  • Please inquire about rates during your 15-minute phone consultation.

Provincial health insurance programs do not cover fees for Social Workers in private practice. However, many clients find that their extended health plans include coverage for these services. It is the client’s responsibility to confirm eligibility and reimbursement with their insurance provider.

For your convenience, Berg Counselling offers direct billing only to:

    • Medavie Blue Cross (Veterans Affairs Canada, Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Mounted Police)

    • GreenShield (Niagara Regional Police Services)

If direct billing is not available, you will be provided with a receipt for reimbursement. Fees not covered by insurance may qualify as tax-deductible medical expenses.

    Important Note:
Not all insurance plans cover Registered Social Workers. Please check with your provider to confirm coverage before booking services.
